Many people ask what thermostat their engine takes. The answers are below. And, it boils down to this:
- Temp: All of the engines in these trucks take a 192 degree thermostat, with two exceptions - the 1982 - 84 4.9L inline six cylinder engines take a 197 degree 'stat and the 1982 & 83 3.8L V6 takes a 195 degree 'stat. But, since those temp variations are quite small, it looks like Ford engineers wanted the engines to run in the 190+ degree range.
- Style: Only two of the engines listed use a non-standard thermostat, and that's the 351M and 400. Those use a "bottom-bypass" style of 'stat, and a standard thermostat should not be used in those engines - as discussed on my page re 351M and 400 Engines on the Thermostats tab.
